I’m torn

Frankly, I’d love to see Paul Ryan on the Republican ticket, but at the top, not playing second fiddle. Also, I tend to think he’s more useful in the House of Representatives where he can really play an important role in the nuts and bolts of budget legislation. On the other hand, he’s a known quantity, with a well-earned reputation for fiscal responsibility, which might help him to balance concerns that many conservatives have about Romney’s economic vision (or Rick Santorum’s, for that matter). How says the commentariat?

I've posted on this before. Put him on the ticket, he adds fiscal gravitas, and we need it.

Job one is getting this guy out of there!!! Even if we take the Senate back he will still be able to blunt any attempts at meaningful fiscal reform via vetoes or signing statements.

There is another interesting question out there.

Should Santorum step aside, and if so, when?

He is burning a lot of Romney cash that could be used in the general election.

Ryan would be something of a lightning rod. He could become the issue in an election where Obama ought to be the issue.

On the other hand, he is the most substantive Republican and draws the clearest distinction with a president who deals only in platitudes and can't get a single vote for his budget. Ryan is the farthest thing from Obama's caricature of a do-nothing Congress and the party of no. We would be running something against nothing.

Would the electorate prefer something over nothing? I'm not sure.

Remember at the beginning of the campaign season when he looked like he couldn't get traction? Contrast it with the present. There are plenty of states left, and to bow out would take away their choice. Now Newt and Ron are a different matter. Ron Paul is and has always been a syphon, yet there are no calls for him to get out. Don't be bamboozled...the fat lady hasn't sung.

I've said before, we have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to the VP slot, not so much for POTUS pick. But we have to go with what we have, as long as Barack Obama is booted out. That's the main thing.
