Reagan was able to 'build a consensus' because he believed in something to build a consensus around. He could thus speak to issues and policies convincingly and passionately. You knew where he stood on things. It's called leadership.

My advise to Republicans is: Grow A Backbone.
Grow a backbone and get rid of the Old Guard. That's the only thing that's going to save the Republicans.
